Creating a Sparkle Fan
By Lorraine McAdams
You can use this fan as an accent on a tag or you can create a tag
around the fan itself.
Materials
A misted image
A nice round lace
White sparkle tube
Corners and accents
Plug-in Filters Unlimited 2.0
Let’s get started
We will build the frame first
Open a 450 by 450 transparent canvas
Flood fill with a nice background that will complement you misted image
Selections/select all/contract by 20/then selections invert
(this will give you the start of your frame)
Add a new raster layer (the marching ants are still in place)
Flood fill this new raster layer (within the marching ants) with a color that
is a darker shade from your image
Staying on that layer go to
Effects/Texture Effects/Mosaic-Glass with these settings:

Now with the marching ants still in place go to
Effects/Inner Bevel with these settings:

With the marching ants in place go to
Effects/plug-ins/ Filters Unlimited 2.0/Button frames and choose Glass Frame #3
with these settings:
Frame size (slide slider down to 25)
Shading (slide slider down to 32)
Again keep marching ants in place repeat the same inner bevel settings as above.
Marching ants still in place add a drop shadow with these settings:

Repeat drop shadow with positive 1
Selections/Select none - Your frame is done!
Copy and paste as a new raster layer your misted image resize to fit inside your
frame and place the image to the right. Sharpen image one time. Slide this layer
under your frame layer and above your background layer
You should now have 3 layers your frame, your image and your background
Set this PSP image aside for now
Open a transparent image 450 by 450
Copy and paste your lace or shape that has a center transparent hole or use your
selections tool to draw a center and hit delete to make a center hole
HINT: make sure your layer is a raster layer before hitting delete to
make the center hole.
Add a new raster layer
Flood fill with a color or pattern you want for the center hole and that compliments your
shape colors -Slide this layer below your image.
On your image shape layer use your magic wand to tap an area outside of your shape
You will see the marching ants are now around you shape and around the edge of you image
Highlight your background layer
Your layer palette should look like below:

Make sure you have you background layer selected and hit delete once
Layers merge visible
With your freehand selections tool from the center of your merged image draw up past
your shape to create a 3 sided triangle ending back at the center
Go selection and select Invert then hit delete once
You now have the first section of you fan
I have on a new layer drawn out a triangle with my selections shape tool and flood
filled that triangle with a complimentary color and slid it under the fan triangle
shape layer and used my deform tool to make it fit so there was a border to the triangle
fan slice. I also added an inner bevel to the solid triangle layer to give it depth.
Yours may or may not need this added step.
Merge any layers you may have in your layers palette
Copy and go back to your fame layer that was set aside and paste as a new layer
Your triangle fan slice should be the top layer
Close this layer off
Add corners, text or any accents you want now to the layers below your triangle fan layer.
Merge all layers except the triangle fan slice layer.
Now you must decide how you want your fan to open.
(straight or on an angle like mine is)
Use your deform tool to move the fan slice shape into place where you want
your fan to start to open from making sure that you re-size your fan slice to
match your image.
With your first fan slice in place add a new raster layer
Create a small circle with your Preset Shapes tool
Covert this layer to raster layer and add any inner bevel
This is the center of your fan (the button) and should remain as your top layer
Highlight your fan slice layer and duplicate once
Go to image Free Rotate and on this duplicate layer rotate 20 degrees to the right
Continue duplicating the “first fan layer” each time and free rotating
20 degrees added to the last rotation used and then sliding that new rotated layer
to the top of your layers palette (under the button layer) till you have a completed fan.
Ex: my second fan piece was rotated 20 degrees, the next was rotated 40 degrees,
then the next rotated 60 degrees and so on till you fan is completed.
Use your deform move tool to move each fan pieces into place (under the button layer)
You can also slide you layers in you palette up and down to get different layer effects
to your fan.
Close off all fan layers except the fist fan layer
You should have open in your layers palette your background image with everything merged
now except your fan slices and your button center. Merge your background image and first
fan slice with the button center as your top layer and copy.
Open AS
Paste as a new animation.
Go back to PSP and undo merge visible and leave open your first fan slice and now
open your second fan slice.
Merge all visible.
Copy and paste in AS after the current frame
Continue to open each fan slice one at a time merging each time and copying
leaving the previous fan slices open till all fan slices are open and pasted in AS
Leave this animation in AS open.
Go to PSP where all your layers are open shift D to duplicate
and save your original.
Working on your duplicate image now
Merge all layers
Duplicate 3 times
Close off your top 2 layers and on your bottom layer add your white sparkle tube to your fan.
Make sure to resize the sparkle to be consistent with your fan size
Add your sparkle randomly to each of the remaining layers on the fan
Close off all but your fist layer
Copy and go back to AS and paste after current frame which was the last frame of fan
without the sparkle on it.
Go back to PSP and close the first layer and open the second
Copy that layer and paste that after the current frame in AS
Do the same with your third layer in PSP
Go back to the first layer in PSP and repeat the copy and paste into AS using the
paste after the current frame. With each set of the 3 merged layers in PSP copy and
paste each layer in order 3 more times. Doing each layer one at a time for a total of
4 sets of the 3 merged layers each.
In As I have set my frame rate for the first part of the fan opening to a rate of 70
until the very last frame of my fully open fan which I have set that frame to a rate of 90
All the fan frames with the sparkle are set at a rate of 10
View your animation and then save if you are happy with your animation
You may have to adjust your frame rate some depending on how many fan slices
you have. The fewer fan slices the higher the frame rate is needed.
I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial!
